The final score of 71-12 tells the story of Fullerton’s total dominance over Orange Coast. The true damage was done in the first two plays, as Hornets’ quarterback Chris Lundsberg found wide receiver JT Weir for a 32-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive. The explosive sequence fueled a quick 20-0 lead.
Co-Head Coach Brian Crooks credits the quick start and the effort from all units as the biggest factor for the team’s all-around success.
“The offense scored right away, and Weir had that monster game,” said Crooks. “The defense also made plays going three-and-out, getting the ball back to our offense. It was an all-around team win.”
While the Hornets’ overall team effort was undeniable, the performance of the wide receiver core was more than exceptional. The Pirates’ defense struggled to find an answer, constantly switching coverage schemes and moving from man-to-man to different zone looks, but the adjustments did little to slow the surging Hornets receivers.
Leading the standout receivers was Weir, who accumulated seven receptions for 267 yards and three touchdowns, earning him the hat trick. However, Weir quickly dismissed the praise for his individual performance.
“I’m proud of myself, but I can’t get too high because that’s when you start getting a big head,” said Weir. “I’m proud of everybody. We executed, but we’re not even close to being done.”
While the offense and the impressive passing game may have garnered headlines, the defensive effort was just as crucial. As Crooks mentioned, the offense ignited the dominant performance, but it was the defensive unit that was persistent and didn’t give the Pirates any chance of a counter-attack.
The relentless effort was shown by Fullerton cornerback EJ Robinson, whose play provided a crucial defensive spark during the early offensive surge. Robinson delivered a big blow to the Pirates’ confidence, picking off the Orange Coast quarterback Keanu Vasquez during the initial 20-0 run.
Starting quarterback Lundsberg set the tone with efficiency, completing 5-of-7 passes for 153 yards and four touchdowns before they took him out, concluding his nearly perfect game.
The true testament to the team’s depth came as the game went on. Backup quarterback Jack Schierholz continued the aerial dominance, putting up 200 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-13 passing. Even late in the game, when the Hornets went to their third quarterback, Corin Rynders, the offense didn’t lose a step as he threw for two touchdowns of his own.
The 71-12 final was a showing of total team depth. From the two-play opening touchdown and Weir’s three touchdowns to Robinson’s momentum-stealing interception, along with the eight combined touchdowns thrown by the three Fullerton quarterbacks, the Hornets showed their ability to sustain a complete game. The Hornets are now 4-1 heading into their bye week.
