The FC Office of Campus Safety will be conducting an active shooter drill from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 23. Students can expect to receive a text message from FC’s Office of Campus Communications about the drill at 8:30 a.m.
The drill will primarily focus on practicing emergency communication skills. It aims to strengthen students’ and faculty’s preparedness and coordination. There will be no role-playing or simulated shooting elements.
Students will engage in a shelter-in-place lockdown exercise, followed by the viewing of an educational safety video.
Although the educational safety video is over 10 years old, it still provides an accurate representation of effective emergency threat responses. Updates to district-wide training efforts are expected to take place under Quyen Vuong, the new District Director of Campus Safety of NOCCCD, according to FC’s director of Campus Safety, John Krok.
On April 7, Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma came under fire from a former student but was subdued by the school’s principal, Kirk Moore. Rising numbers of emergency events across the United States may leave students fearful for their safety in academic environments, according to a 2025 study from PubMed Central. Academic institutions can facilitate a worry-free environment for their community by keeping their campus safety protocols up-to-date.
Building trust among the Fullerton College community is a priority for the school’s Office of Campus Safety, which is why campus safety personnel implement a service-oriented approach.
“We view ourselves as student advocates more than an enforcement body,” said Krok. “We emphasize visibility, professionalism, and approachability, and we work closely with students, faculty, and staff to address concerns in a respectful and transparent manner.”
Additionally, FC campus safety officers regularly engage in emergency response training, including scenario-based training and coordination drills, according to Krok.
Students out of class at the time of the drill will be directed to the North Gym to shelter in place and view the safety video.
The on-campus Starbucks, located adjacent to Disability Support Services/FC mailroom in Building 840, will close at 10 a.m. to accommodate the emergency drill.
To ensure readiness in an emergency situation, FC students and faculty can refer to the Office of Campus Safety’s Emergency Preparedness page, which includes an active shooter emergency plan. Students can also contact the Office of Campus Safety directly at (714) 992-7080 Ext. 0 for further information surrounding the upcoming drill.
