With Veteran’s Day approaching, it’s a good time to remember what the men and woman who served our country as part of the United States Military in any branch have sacrificed throughout the years.

Not only have these veterans been deployed overseas to serve and protect our country, they have missed many special occasions with their families such as birthdays, life changing events and most especially, holidays.

This time of year is one of the most difficult times to be away from home, and it’s tough on their family members as well. They don’t get to have the same privileges civilians receive as far as going out shopping for gifts or just being able to relax with the people they love the most.

The Veteran’s Resource Center at Fullerton College hosts a care package drive every year to send out presents to veterans who won’t be able to make it home for the holidays.

There are many ways students are able to help out. One is to donate items that they wouldn’t be able to get on their base such as electronic games, books, movies and music. Items like toothpaste, toothbrushes and other hygiene-type items they are able to purchase on their own, but those are still greatly appreciated.

Another way to show appreciation is to write out individual letters, even if you don’t know the person, to help lift a veteran’s spirit.

Former FC student and marine, David Rodriguez, had been deployed to Kosovo and Bosnia for roughly two years and was fortunate enough that his unit was sent care packages for the holidays.

“I remember something that I got was a letter from an elementary student saying ‘Thank you,'” Rodriguez said. “That felt kind of warm because I have a son myself and not being able to get anything from him because he was too little, it felt good.”

That small act of kindness, which included a hand-drawn picture, touched his heart and was one of the best things he received while deployed.

Another unique item Rodriguez really enjoyed was a book called “The Love Dare.” It helped him through a really tough time in his relationship, since he had been away from home for so long.

So far the VRC has received various types of energy bars, tooth paste and toothbrushes, but want more things to send that those deployed do not have access to.

These little things can really help make a difference for those who are away from their families for long periods of time and can remind them that they are cared about and being thought of.

In light of Veteran’s Day, the care packages are one of many ways students can show respect to the many men and women who gave their lives to serve the United States.

Packages will be sent out after the packing party on Nov. 20, and the VRC is looking for volunteers to help get everything together.
