A movie night under the stars

The Night Owl is a confection of coffee, art, and community, as owner Joe Rosati builds a vision of bringing people together. Among the many events hosted at the Fullerton coffee shop, its weekly movie night is a popular spot for young and old alike.

As summer draws to a close, The Night Owl returns with a wide variety of family oriented films, hosted every Tuesday at 8 p.m., at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Amerige Avenue.

Kicking off the month of October was a showing of Mel Brook’s “Young Frankenstein” to a crowd of laughing patrons.

Advertised as a cheapskate date under the stars, soda and popcorn are a popular snack at $3, for a movie night special.

Many of the guests are long time customers since the Night Owl’s opening in 2011. Among them are Rick Preuss and his daughter Kelli, who frequent the coffee shop on a weekly basis.

“It’s more family oriented and less corporate,” Preuss said. “There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment, artists and musicians. I recommend anyone to try it out.”

Rosati, who worked as a bartender for 20 years, had long dreamed of opening a coffee shop as an oasis amid the many bars and nightlife.

“Make it a place for night owls to come,” Rosati reminisced. “This is a nest for people to laugh and enjoy. I wanted to have a sense of community, where we can realize that we are more alike than different.”

A large assortment of films are in store for the upcoming holiday season. The remainder of October will feature a selection of Halloween-themed films, including “Beetlejuice” and more. Rosati plans to theme November around the “Harry Potter” franchise as it continues into December.

Announcements for subsequent films and future events can be found on the coffee shop’s Instagram and Facebook profiles.

“I want for people to get involved,” Rosati said. “I’m always looking for new artists and creative people to come.”

Anyone with recommendations, new ideas or possible entertainment can all reach out via the coffee shop’s social media.
