In 1995, Fullerton College began organizing events with KinderCaminata, a program in which kindergarten students visit local colleges. This year, six different districts participated on April 24. FC demonstrated that education has power and helps students grow with hands-on class experience.
Departments such as Horticulture, Biotech, and Drone showcased what each program offers. Horticulture’s booth offered real bugs to hold while Drone shared their robot dog. Kindergarteners interacted with what the departments showcased, like stickbugs, snakes, soda rockets and a robot dog. Even the cosmetology students had a booth to facepaint the visiting kindergarteners.
An event like KinderCaminata can take months of planning, and recruiting volunteers for the event began early in the semester with flyers and event tabling. Students who volunteered either ran booths, led kinder classes as KinderBuddies, or were greeters and helped make things run smoothly. The goal for the event is to show young students a potential future for themselves and to grow their motivation to reach their goals.
According to an article published by Hornet Media, the theme has always been Cesar Chavez’s motto, “Si, se puede!” But due to recent abuse allegations made against Cesar Chavez, the official website for Kindercaminata now has no mention of Chavez; it now honors Huerta, also mentioned in another article published by Hornet Media.
While KinderCaminata is still being held every spring semester, it does not diminish the fact that students learn new ways about the real world and the hard work that comes with it.
